Candle Care and Safety
At The Luminary Candles we want our candles to give you light and joy while filling your space with aromatic fragrances and beauty to inspire love, creativity and relaxation.
We recommend the following our candle care and safety tips below.
CANDLE SAFETY -
- Before lighting your candle, ensure that all packaging has been removed.
- Always burn candle within sight.
- Always store your candles in a cool, dark and dry place. Avoid placing your candles where they will be directly exposed to sunlight or harsh indoor lighting.
- Keep your candles out of reach from children and pets.
- Never leave a burning candle unattended.
- Avoid placing candles on or near flammable materials including flowers, curtains and books.
- To avoid wax splash or smoking, use a snuffer to extinguish a candle. Replace and lids once the candle has been extinguished.
- Extinguish a candle if it smokes, flickers, or the flame becomes too high. These signs indicate the candle is not burning properly and the flame isn't controlled. Let the candle cool, trim the wick, then check for drafts before re-lighting.
- We recommend that you burn the candle for no more than 3 hours at a time.
- Always remember to extinguish your candle before you leave the room or go to bed.
SCULPTURAL CANDLES –
Our sculptural candles are designed to be a statement piece in your home. Should you choose to light these candles, please note each candle will have a unique burn, wax melt drip/ pool and varied burn time depending on the design.
Pre-Burn Preparations -
- Before lighting your candle, ensure that all packaging has been removed.
- Place the candle on a fire-resistant flat dish or candle plate that will collect the wax that will drip. Expect wax spillage during burning.
First Burn -
- Trim wick to ¼ of an inch before each burn to promote an even burn, a steady flame and limit sooting/mushrooming of a cotton wick. For a wooden wick, trim to 1/5 of an inch.
- Light your candle in a well-ventilated safe and stable space, clear of flowers, curtains, books and other flammable objects.
- Always remember to extinguish your candle before you leave the room or go to bed.
Ongoing use-
- When not in use, place your candle away from direct sunlight and nearby heat sources.
- Before you light the candle again, we recommend that you trim the wick ¼ of an inch from the surface of the wax, to ensure a consistent smoke-free flame.
- We recommend that you burn the candle for no more than 2 hours at a time.
- Always use caution when handling lit candles. Please read and follow any additional safety guidelines provided with your candle.
VESSEL / CONTAINER CANDLES
Our container candles are designed to be enjoyed and savoured for the light they emit and scent they produce. Burn times will vary depending on the following factors -the size of the vessel/ container, the first burn wax pool, the type of wick used and the placement of your candle.
Pre-Burn Preparations -
- Before lighting your candle, ensure that all packaging has been removed.
- Place the candle on a fire-resistant flat surface.
First Burn -
- When lighting the candle for the first time, burn until wax melts across entire surface to the sides of vessel to promote an even burn and prevent tunnelling.
- Trim wick/s to ¼ of an inch before each burn to promote an even burn, a steady flame and limit sooting of a cotton wick. For a wooden wick, trim to 1/5 of an inch. Wooden wicks have a wider base than cotton wicks and will create a larger melt pool resulting in a clean, even burn.
Ongoing use-
- Trim the candle wick after each burn. This is very important to prevent the candles from smoking on the next burn or from burning the sides of the glass. A good pair of wick trimmers will cut and remove the excess wick cleanly.
- To preserve the fragrance, do not burn your candle more than 3 hours at a time.
- To maximize scent throw, burn in desired space for 30 mins with the door closed. Open windows and doors will disperse scent.
- If soot ever forms on the inside of the vessel/ container, extinguish candle, wait for it to cool, then wipe with a clean damp cloth and remove any debris. Trim the wick and relight.
- Extinguish candle with a snuffer, or dip wick into melted wax and then straighten wick to prevent smoking and also prevent hot wax from splattering. Do not blow out.
- Do not burn your candle all the way down. Always leave at least ½ inch of unmelted wax at the bottom.
- Vessels and Containers will get hot during the burn, do not move the candles while lit.
